Part of a trio: In charge of pose estimation projections and assisted with fabrication
May - Aug 2022
Embarking on a groundbreaking collaboration, the Changi Airport Group joined forces with the Singapore University of Technology and Design for an innovative upcycling venture. This dynamic partnership aimed to breathe new life into the recently revamped Terminal 2 waiting lounge, employing discarded materials from the old terminal as the project's creative canvas.
At the heart of our group's visionary endeavor lay the concept of crafting an engaging and immersive experience for arriving passengers. The focal point: a meticulously designed screen constructed from repurposed perforated ceiling panels. This architectural marvel served as a captivating beacon, enticing and intriguing those making their way into the Terminal 2 waiting lounge.
What set our project apart was the integration of cutting-edge technology. Using pose estimation techniques to project different colours and images on the perforated panels screen, an interactive display unfolded. As passengers traversed the vicinity, their silhouettes triggered a dynamic interplay of emojis and colours, each projection tailored to the unique movements and shapes of those passing by. This not only added a playful and visually arresting element but also transformed the facade into a living, responsive artwork.
Passersby on the outside of the facade along the escalator, drawn by the animated spectacle, would be compelled to investigate the source of the enchantment within the lounge. This ingenious design would not only welcome arriving passengers but also actively engaged and beckoned them to join the vibrant atmosphere within.
In essence, our upcycling venture at Terminal 2 transcended mere environmental sustainability; it epitomized a harmonious fusion of creativity, technology, and sustainability, setting a new standard for airport aesthetics and passenger engagement.
